My Week that Was - July 9

A stretch of the Military Ridge Trail. 7/2/22 dwm
This week was difficult.  The day the blog posts is the day of Richard Sawyer's funeral.  While his passing was expected, that doesn't mean less pain or sorrow.  It is a blessing that the pain, confusion, and issues are done and he is now at rest.  He will be missed.

His death means that all four of parents are gone, leaving us to find our way.  It's another marker on the road to getting older, and it is jarring since they were with us and now they're gone.

My week started Saturday with a long run at the gym before getting to ride mid-day.  It was a laboring 30 mile trip.

Just Saturday was the only good weather day.  Sunday increased the heat and the Fourth of July was humid and rainy with several rounds of rain and storms.

It was during the rain we caught up on a show we saw last year.  Only Murders in the Building is back for a second season.  The concept of the show is captured in the title.  I'm wondering how many people in the same building can be killed without the authorities figuring it out... but its a fun show with Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin as stars.

Learned quite a bit about the actor Rose Marie in a documentary we just came across called "Wait for Your Laugh."  I know Rose Marie for her role as a comedy writer (named Sally Rogers) on the Dick Van Dyke show which I watched re-runs on WGN in the 1980s.  It lives on in syndication.  Rose Marie became a child star in radio in 1926 and was a working actor when she died in 2017 at 94.  Even if you don't know her work, it's worth watching.

Yesteryear was the topic of conversation in a donor visit this week.  I knew the donor grew up in Janesville so we talked about what we remembered about living there.  It turns out her childhood home was less than two blocks from where I grew up.  The common memory was 'little' Woodman's grocery store which was their original location during her childhood and a neighborhood market during mine.

Thursday was the first time this year giving rides for residents in memory care.  It was especially fun seeing a woman who has ridden with me more than two dozen times over the years.  The joy they experience is the reason I ride.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost twice to division rival Chicago in the opening series of their latest home stand.  Overall, the Crew has been doing better after a rough patch over the first two or three weeks of June.  Pittsburgh comes to town for three games starting Friday - the Pirates and Brewers split four games in Steel City - this would be a good time for the Brew Crew to sweep or at least win the series.

Have a great week and Go Brewers!
