My Busted Bracket

The first round of the tournament unfolds over Thursday and Friday after a "play-in" bracket trims the 68-teams to the 64 we expect in a bracket.

I had 3 of the First Four games correct on my sheet (see photo right at low center).

In the First Round (outside matchups on either side) I selected 20 winners out of 32 games with 12 of my Sweet Sixteen intact.

Then came the Second Round.  In Saturday's eight games, the first one included the Tennessee Volunteers, the team I picked to win it all.

The #3 seed Volunteers appeared to have a favorable matchup with an 11 - seed Michigan on the other side of the bracket.  Michigan isn't Cinderella.  They're from a big conference with a pedigree most teams in the dance would die for.  The Wolverines eliminated Tennessee 76 - 68.

By the way, after Iowa State beat higher seed LSU on the evening of day 2, CBS Sports reported it had no more perfect brackets.  Saturday eliminated the #1-team in the East Region (Baylor) after the second seed Kentucky lost its first game.  If you like putting money on games to keep things interesting, that's fine - just remember all winning streaks end.

Wisconsin's dance crashed Sunday afternoon when those Iowa State Cyclones outperformed the Badgers at both ends of the court.  It was a great season for Wisconsin, but after the team secured a share of the B1G regular season title, Badger fans like me were hoping for an appearance in the third round for our team.

The #2 team in the Midwest was bounced in the second round, making it two #2s and a #1 eliminated before the second weekend.  Arizona, #1 in the South, survived overtime to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Three of my final teams are alive, but with the champ out of the picture, I'm busted.  Here's what last week's bracket looks like now:
