Ice Time

Just a little open ice on the Wisconsin River

While Wisconsin has had its fair share of ice-cold days lately, the sun is climbing toward the equator which means its stronger rays are melting ice and snow even when the day starts at zero degrees.

On the Wisconsin River yesterday, there was a lot of snow and ice concealing a wide body of water.  It was something special to see the expanse of white, made spectacular with strips of blue.

The river might be wide open inside two weeks.  The thick ice layer on Lake Monona will soon turn inhospitable for ice fishing people and their shanties.

The snow this past week was needed in many areas of Wisconsin.  More snow and rain is needed for planting and growing.

As the season changes on the calendar, the weather may or may not follow suit.  March is expected to enter as either a lion or lamb then leave opposite.  The Ides are the middle of each month, but were most vexing for Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.  In Wisconsin the middle of March is usually time for the boys high school basketball state championships which often coincide with the last big snow of the season.

Beware the ides of March, especially if you are counting on lake ice to support your weight!
