My Week that Was - October 2

The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their third National League Central Division title Sunday in front of a sold-out home crowd.

I wasn't there, but celebrated with them from a distance as they pushed past the New York Mets 8 - 4 for a seven game lead with six games to play.

The Brew Crew has won 94 games.  The World Series runner-up edition won 95.  This year's team can surpass Harvey's Wallbangers record with two wins, but by every other measurement, this squad is already the best Brewer team ever.

I'd like to see them finish with their best won - loss record, but more important is being healthy and ready for either the Atlanta Braves or Philadelphia Phillies in American Family Field Friday, October 8.  Go Brewers!

(Wednesday, the news broke that one of our relief pitchers was upset about something in the aftermath of Sunday's celebrations and hit a wall with his pitching hand.  It's broken, requires surgery, and he is unlikely to be available for any postseason game.  Ugh.)

Later Sunday, the Green Bay Packers were in San Francisco for their third game on the 49ers' home field.

 I didn't have high hopes.

My Fearless Forecast predicted the home team winning because I expected the San Francisco defense to control the Packer offense.

When I saw our offensive line was starting a young player with only a handful of NFL snaps instead of our usual starter I thought we were in trouble.

Instead, coach Matt LaFleur and quarterback Aaron Rodgers came out determined to run the ball and pass the ball before the defense could get to the QB.  It was a successful strategy.  The biggest surprise was the Green Bay defense.

The Packers took the ball away from the 49ers twice and sacked their quarterback four times.  The Green Bay defense isn't a stone wall, but demonstrated more resolve than I've seen the first two games.  If they can build on this one, I like their potential.  Next up, the Steelers in Lambeau Field tomorrow.

Wednesday I was part of a "Zoom Chat" with residents on Oakwood Village's west campus.  The invitation asked me to introduce myself, share some information about my family and hobbies and provide an update about the foundation in 2021.  Fifty people attended virtually from their homes as Covid-19 precautions continue on campus.

The most difficult thing about speaking on Zoom when showing slides is that it's impossible to see the audience.  I'd much rather be in the same room.

The end is coming for this season of rickshaw rides.  Some new people enjoyed their first rides, including one celebrating their 100th birthday.  That was great fun.

Yesterday, I stopped for gas on my way to Oakwood's east campus.  As I pulled back out, I adjusted the mileage to track the miles I drive on each tank.  Dad used to keep a notebook in the family cars where the driver entered the price of gas, number of gallons received, mileage on the odometer, and figured out the number of miles per gallon for the previous tank.

My car calculates its own miles per gallon, so I don't carry a car notebook.  After re-setting the mile counter, I drove down the ramp to the Beltline.  As I came up to speed I looked at the display and saw the number 97!  What!

I wasn't going 97 miles an hour since I wasn't flying past people.  After a flash of panic, I noticed the display was in kilometers per hour.  Since I wasn't sure how the display changed, I didn't mess with it until I got to the east campus.  After trying several options, it finally flipped back to miles per hour.

That's a good thing, I know 100 kilometers per hour is 62 miles per hour, but that's about all I can figure out while driving.

I hope your week doesn't involve any difficult math problems!
