My Week that Was - October 16

It's October, so biking season is quickly pedaling to a close.  The weather forecast was favorable Saturday morning, so I got out to take advantage of one the last seasonably warm mornings before winter.

The weather was pleasant.  Leaves are adding areas of color in forests of green.  I encountered at least three dozen turkeys, most of them in the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.

Less pleasant were the detours caused by road construction.  Twice I was forced from the preferred route.  I'll frequently check to see if I can get through despite the 'road closed' barriers, but that was too much trouble.

There were a few household tasks waiting for me, so I limited my ride to 26 miles.  Most of the ride was over familiar territory, except for a pedestrian and bike bridge from Warwick Way that took me safely over the Beltline.  It replaced an old crossing with a nicer style and friendlier grade to ride up and over the high-traffic road.

After the ride it was time for breakfast.  We tried the Monona Bakery and Eatery for the first time.  It was great!  The family-owned place features Honduran dishes and scratch-made pastries.  I ordered pancakes that were exquisitely fluffy and delicious.  We'll go there again.

Green Bay went to Cincinnati to play the Bengals one week after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, another team in the AFC North.  This year the NFC and AFC North Divisions are playing each other in cross-conference games, and the Queen City is the only current NFL city where Aaron Rodgers didn't have a victory.

These games are difficult.  The National Football League is set-up so most teams are nearly equal in terms of talent and home teams get a boost from their fans.

The Bengals are building back to regular play-off contention.  They probably had this game circled on the schedule as a measuring stick of their progress.

Green Bay's defense played well, turning the ball over twice and Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes, moving into 5th place on the all-time list.

Kicker Mason Crosby, however, had one of his worse games.  He missed an extra point in the first half; two potential game winning field goals at the end of the game and another in overtime before ultimately kicking the ball between the uprights to win the game.

Cincinnati helped out by throwing an interception and missing a field goal at the end of regulation and during overtime.  That one was so close, the Bengal kicker was celebrating his kick, thinking it was good.

A win is a win and style points don't matter.  Crosby showed resilience in converting his last kick after three misses and the team no doubt breathed a sigh of relief as they improved to 4 - 1.  Next up the Packers travel to Chicago.

The big news in the NFL this week was the resignation of Raiders coach Jon Gruden.  Emails of his surfaced where he made racist and misogynistic remarks that are inappropriate and offensive.

We might think our email or social media posts are private, but when it comes down to it, we are better off assuming whatever we write may end up on the front page of the New York Times.  It's a good lesson.

The Brewers season came to a sudden and sad end Tuesday night in Atlanta.

They won game 1, then didn't score in the second or third games.  Tuesday's game 4 was must win.

Milwaukee took a 2 - 0 lead in the fourth inning, the Braves tied it in the bottom of the fourth.  In the fifth, the Brewers scored twice for a two run lead, Atlanta tied it at 4.

In the 8th, Milwaukee called on its closer to keep the game tied into the last inning.  Josh Hader was the man we wanted on the mound in the bottom of the 8th.

He retired the first two batters, then on a pitch that didn't break, Atlanta's Freddie Freeman hit it out of the park.

The Brewers went quietly in their half of the 9th, a disappointing end to a terrific season that allowed fans like me to dream of reaching the World Series.

Well, there's always next season.

Thursday we traveled to Missouri, our destination, Missouri Star Quilts Company.  If you're a quilter, you likely need no introduction to the shop that's become iconic in part due to its YouTube instructional videos.

That's what hooked my wife on the Missouri Star brand, enough that she's been buying their products for years and just had to see it in person.

Thursday was the day, there will be more on the quilt experience coming up.

That wasn't the only quilt shop visited on the trip, but as the reason for the journey, it gets top billing.

We were close to several childhood homes of famous people, including J.C. Penney, Walt Disney, and John Pershing; and I had the opportunity to shoot two covered bridges and a lighthouse!

There will be more blogs on those topics and more in the next few weeks, including a look at the first place we lived.

It's been a fun trip, but it is good to be home.  Have a great week!
