Wisconsin Water Falls - Amnicon River

Our trip to Minnesota's North Shore brought us close to two Wisconsin state parks with spectacular falls.

The 45-mile long Amnicon River runs its entire course within Douglas County starting near Amnicon and Dowling Lakes before emptying east of Superior into the big lake with the same name.

During the 19th century the river carried trees from the forests of northwest Wisconsin to the lumber operations in Superior and Duluth.

The drought and timing our visit for late summer meant there wasn't as much water dropping over the falls, but it was still beautiful.  The Amnicon Falls State Park is friendly for people mainly interested in watching the water as its a short walk over level ground to see them.

The lower falls drop into a small gorge.  I sat on its rim looking back at the river falling over the sandstone bluff while enjoying the sight and sound of water in the wilderness.

In spring, winter run-off likely propelled its loads of lumber over the falls with nimble lumberjacks poking and moving them in-line to move downstream.

The only lumber going downstream these days are blown off trees.  If they don't get caught on something, those branches have a chance to make it to Lake Superior.

On the other side of the parking lot is Now and Then Falls.  As the name suggests it doesn't always have water falling.  It was quiet for us.
