Vintage Video - South Dakota History

My timing couldn't have been better in terms of getting hired as the Pierre Bureau reporter/photographer for KELO-Land News in 1986.

Just three years later the state was celebrating its Centennial, which I didn't know at the time, but that milestone provided an almost unending amount of content.

I've already shared a number of Centennial-themed stories in these Vintage Videos:  Cattle Drive, Hold the Horses (two stories), and In the Water.  Three more stories will be included in the upcoming Vintage Video - South Dakota Grab Bag.

Look at the final story in this episode to see the Flaming Fountain outside the state's capitol.  When I checked online to learn more about it, I found that the fountain no longer holds a flame but the water comes out of the ground at 92-degrees.  There just isn't enough natural gas coming out of the well to keep what used to be called the eternal flame lit.

You will see a story about the official Centennial Play before looking at the history of the Capital Journal.  Then comes two stories on an artifact left by French explorers and its home in the State Museum, followed with a story on the grand hotel which used to house state legislators when they were in session, before the final piece on the Governors who presided over South Dakota's first 100 years.
