Fear the Deer - Go Bucks!

The Milwaukee Bucks play Game 1 of the NBA Finals tonight.

It's 47 years since the last time the Bucks were in the Finals (they lost to Boston) and 50 years since their only NBA title when they beat the Washington Bullets in 1971.

I was 10 and 6 respectively for those two events.  It was the time I became a sports fan, listening to Eddie Doucette describe Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (he was Lew Alcindor when they won), the Big O (Oscar Robertson), Bobby Dandridge, Lucius Allen, and Coach Larry Costello as they set the pace in the Western Conference.

While the Green Bay Packers won an NFL title in 1966 and Super Bowls I and II in my lifetime, but I don't remember those victories as much as I did the Bucks' title.  The Packers broke my championship drought when they won Super Bowl XXXI.

Milwaukee's NBA team has been competitive for many years and reached the Eastern Conference Finals many times (they are the only NBA team to represent both conferences in the the Finals) but never advancing.  Drafting a tall and skinny kid from Greece didn't seem like the answer when he was drafted in 2013, but the team built around him is the second best team the city and state have ever seen.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Chris Middleton have played together six years and are a great pair of stars who represent Wisconsin well.  However, the additions of Jrue Holiday and P.J. Tucker this season closed the gap between pretty good and elite.

The Phoenix Suns are a strong team.  Giannis was hurt in the Eastern Conference Finals and his availability for the best of seven championship series is questionable.

His team rallied after his injury, defeating Atlanta to advance and keep the fervent hopes and dreams of Bucks fans (hard-core and casual alike) who can't wait to see this team make their opponents "Fear the Deer!"

I like the Bucks chances, and if Giannis is able to lace up his Nike Zoom Freak shoes to join his team on the court, I think there is a good chance the Lawrence O'Brien trophy will soon reside in the Cream City.

Go Bucks, Go!
