Vintage Videos - Featuring YOU

'Screen grab' from 1992 story with WISC on

It continues to be an interesting venture reviewing and choosing videos to share in this space.

This week it's ten stories, five from my time with KELO-land and five from WISC.

It starts with transportation.  The first tells the story of an old railroad line coming out of mothballs to serve farmers in south Wisconsin.  The second gives you a ride on a D-I-Y solution a farmer created to reach work faster.

From there we go to Delavan, Wisconsin which served as the winter home of the Ringling Brothers from 1847 to 1874.  In 1987 it opened the doors of the International Clown Hall of Fame.  During my time with Channel 3, I did three stories on the annual induction of new honorees; this video shows two.

One slightly aggravation in putting these pieces together is missing information.  A feature on a first-year teacher in Clinton, Wisconsin chosen as one of the 100 best in the United States would be better if I knew her first name.  It's not mentioned in the story because the anchor introducing the piece would have identified the winner.  The story holds up though in her enthusiasm and dedication to the kids in her classroom.

From a character study to a character in Pierre, South Dakota known as Uncle Matt.  Matt owned a popular store downtown that featured more than a thousand campaign buttons on a wall.  He was a compelling interview with an obvious passion for his hobby.

After that, I did a feature on a sharp-toothed icon, but he refused to speak.  The reason will be clear when you watch.

Pierre's main streets were lined with petunias when we lived there.  I couldn't find any reference to the flowers online, so I don't know if the tradition continues.  Another annual event which I was invited to join was going inside the capitol's dome.

Finally, a story about an outhouse.  As hard as it is to believe, in 1990, Beloit Wisconsin still hadn't run sewer lines to everyone.  A TV story needs two things, video and a good subject.  On this story, I hit the jackpot with Phyllis Mick.
