My Week That Was - January 2

Saturday was quiet around the house.  It was a good day to write and relax after a morning run.

Sunday after church was mostly waiting for the Packer game to start that evening.  It was a big game for Green Bay as Tennessee came in with a good record and a running game expected to test the team's defense.

The Packer defense was up to the test, limiting the Titans star running back below his usual rushing average and kept him out of the end zone.

The Packer offense got off to a great start and kept on scoring, putting 40 on the scoreboard.  There were areas to clean-up, but it was easily their best game of the season.

There is one game left.  Sunday afternoon they play the Chicago Bears at 3:25.  At stake is a top seed and first-round by in the playoffs for the Pack.  Go Pack!

Tuesday night into Wednesday morning we received 6 inches of snow in Verona.  The snow stopped before I went to work, however, so once I made my way out of the driveway it was an easy drive.  We aren't out of the woods, more snow/freezing rain is expected for the New Year.

Late Wednesday I received the good news that residents and staff at Oakwood will be vaccinated by the end of next week.

The Packers lost one of the cornerstones of their team Thursday when Left Tackle David Bakhtiari tore his ACL.  That ends his season which will hurt the team's Super Bowl aspirations.  The team has depth on the line surviving injuries without missing a beat this year, but this will be a big test for the team to win the next four games.

The new year dawned and one of the first news items I heard was our President has convinced 140 House Republicans to protest the ratification of the Electoral College vote.  It is sad day for democracy and the country.  Some are calling votes illegal because they were counted after polls closed, which is how most states are required to count absentee and early votes.  I was one of thousands of voters to vote early - that doesn't make it illegal, just smart.  I guess it's a fitting book-end to the past four years which started with lies about how many people attended the inauguration and ends with what sounds more and more like a bratty teen-ager who needs to be sent to his room.

These two paragraphs were added early afternoon January 2.  The more I've thought about the mess that is this administration and its refusal to follow the rule of law, I recalled that in mid-summer as many states were urging voters to vote early and safely either via mail or in person that the Trump campaign loudly urged their supporters to only vote in person on election day.  The clear vision that is hindsight makes it clear the strategy was to fight all votes note received on election day by asking they be thrown in the trash.

Instead of submitting to the will of the people, you know, that thing our democratic republic is based on, the goal was to limit the ability of the people who probably wouldn't vote for you from voting in the first place or take away their vote after the fact.  It's despicable and offensive.  Thankfully most state and federal jurists have evaluated cases based on law and the Constitution, even those jurists who were nominated by the current President.  I trust that votes will be recognized and ultimately the Constitution will win.  I suspect that at some point in the near future, the Republicans currently doing the bidding of a lame duck President will pay the price the next time their names are on the ballot.

We're happy about the new year dawning, thankfully a new administration is taking office 18 days from now.

In yesterday's blog there was a short quiz.  Here are the answers:

What Happened Then?
1906    San Francisco Earthquake
1929    Stock Market Crash that lead to the Great Depression
1941    Attack on Pearl Harbor
1963    Assassination of John F. Kennedy
2001    September 11 Attacks
2020    COVID-19 Global Pandemic

It's a new year people, make a difference!
