Radio Roseville - Chapter 37

Pete woke to a loud knock on the door. “Hey, Pete! You better turn on your radio!”

Moss rolled over and hit the switch.

“Congratulations to WRSE’s Pete Moss and Jean Marberg – it's their wedding day!” The Dixie Cups song, “Going to the Chapel” began to play.

Pete grabbed his phone to text Jean, receiving a text back, “Did someone just knock on your door?”

Because we're

Going to the chapel
And we're gonna get married
Going to the chapel

Gee I really love you
And we're gonna get married
Going to the chapel of love

After breakfast, Jean and her daughters headed to the Silver Shears to get their hair done for the ceremony.  Then it was on to church where they’d dress for pictures before the mid-day ceremony.

---

Karen and Connie Temple refused their usual Covid Rations business today since they had dozens of cupcakes to bake and frost for the Marberg-Moss wedding.  50 were chocolate with white icing; 50 were yellow cake with chocolate frosting; 50 strawberry cupcakes; and 50 cornbread muffins infused with honey.

They were moving as fast as they could since they needed to get them to the church by 10 am.

----

Pete was meeting with Kevin, Ken, and Jeff from the station for breakfast at Karen’s Kandies. It was a social occasion, but with a little business thrown in to make sure all the bases were covered for Pete’s week out of the office.  Kevin, Ken, and Jeff already agreed there was no issue that required interrupting Pete’s honeymoon.

Karen had Mt. Dew for Pete decorated in a soda-size tuxedo and four cinnamon rolls hot and waiting for them when they walked in.

---

The Silver Shears was closed for the bridal party.  Flutes of Champagne were standing behind a tray of strawberries and other fresh fruit when they arrived.  The stylists double-checked the preferred styles for the big day and went to work, making sure they got the women under hair dryers with enough time to reach the church.

----

Gus was in the church kitchen working with Louise Thom on the preparations for the reception.  Jean and Pete wanted an early wedding and reception, so their guests had time to travel or get back to work.  A lot of the Marbergs are active farmers with fields and livestock that needed tending, plus a mid-day ceremony meant Jean and Pete could start their honeymoon that much sooner.

Louise had re-washed the church crystal for the head table and personally made her famous mints as favors at each place.

Gus delivered a selection of slider sandwiches for the light lunch plus the ingredients for the punch.  He was also looking for Karen to pull in the parking lot any minute.

---

After breakfast, Pete shook hands with his buddies, promising to not call the station during his honeymoon.  He reminded Kevin they needed to be at the church ready for photos at 10:45, then headed home to get dressed.

---

Emjay drove her mom and sister to the church.  Thanks to a recent remodel at Grace Lutheran the bride’s room was big enough for the three of them to finish their make-up and get dressed.

---

Bob Tamron was setting lights in the sanctuary and two remote cameras he could use during the service.  He always double-checked with clergy before the ceremony to make sure he could place them in the chancel to capture facial expressions of the bride and groom.

Pastor Bob was OK with it since the cameras were silent and unobtrusive.

Tamron set two more video cameras. One in the center of the balcony and another at a 45-degree angle to where the wedding party would stand.  That second camera swiveled to capture Jean and her maids of honor enter the sanctuary.

He was placing the tripod in place and adjusting the last light when Pete and Kevin Storm walked in.

Bob took candid shots of the three in conversation then a shot of three at the front of the church.  By the time he finished, Jean, Emjay, and Elaine joined them.  He asked the pastor to step up front to include everyone in the photo so the pastor could attend to other things while the rest of the pictures were taken.

Tamron was determined to keep the proceedings on schedule, wrapping up by 11:15.

---

The organist played her first notes at 10 minutes to 12.  She was scheduled to play until five seconds before noon, when the church bells are rung, following by playing the Canon in D Major.

The gang from the station sat together on the right-side of the church.  Except for Blake, everyone else connected to the station was there to celebrate with their boss and friend.

The three Marberg Implement dealers closed for five hours during the middle of the day in honor of Jean’s ceremony.  She asked her brother Glenn to walk her down the aisle.  Jake and John Bauer had seats in the second row, but on the side in case John needed a break during the service.

Gus, Tom and their families were there as were other business owners and civic leaders in Roseville.

In a quiet spot adjacent to the bride’s room, Pastor stood with Jean, Pete, Emjay, Elaine, and Kevin for a short talk and prayer.  When finished, he looked at the group with a smile and asked, “Ready?”

In unison, Pete and Jean answered, “Yes!”
