Radio Roseville - Chapter 25

Pete and Kevin got to the station early this morning – going over the order of their presentation which they wanted to do in less than 10 minutes, then send electronic documents and detailed suggestions after the conference.

“Kevin, it’s ten minutes until the conference, are you set?”

“Yes, Pete, I think so.  You start us out and lay out the presentation before I take over with what we liked about their station and its standing in the community.  After that, you will identify opportunities available and the way they might explore them.”

“Kevin, I can’t thank you enough for your help on this.  I had ideas about working with another station and offering an analysis, but it wouldn’t have been this organized.  I think we’re ready to go.”

“Me too, Pete, I think this went very well.  I’m going to put the first slide up and go live into our web meeting so there is something for Jack and his staff to see when they log in.”

Kevin refilled his coffee while Pete took a long sip of his Diet Dew, took a deep breath, and began.

“Good Morning, Jack.  It’s good to be with you again.  Kevin and I want to thank you again for the opportunity to visit Ironwood a couple weeks ago.  We had a great time.  Our presentation will be short and to the point, we’ll introduce our ideas which we can discuss, and we’ll share the documents, handbook, if you will, on how you might implement it.

“Let’s start with at the beginning.  You have an outstanding station.  The people we talked to around Ironwood know you and your staff and consider you to be part of their families.  Radio is a remarkable medium.  It’s an intimate form of communication and that requires a strong relationship between you and your audience.

“Kevin is going to start with our evaluation of your station’s strengths then share where we think you have some opportunities that will work for you in the future.  Kevin?”

“Thanks, Pete.  Before I start, let me say I enjoyed our weekend in Ironwood and I look forward to visiting again with hopefully more time to fish.

“In 2020, everyone has options when it comes to information and entertainment.  That’s true in Ironwood, but you continue to be the station they rely on to learn what’s happening on the national, state, and local level.  That's your edge and something satellite stations and personal playlists can’t match.

“You offer a variety of music on your AM and FM stations that appeal to the local audience, and you are able to change gears when necessary.  Congratulations, your hard work and the work of earlier generations have built this station on a strong foundation.

But you can’t be satisfied.  The question is how to build on it.  Our recommendation boils down to one word, ‘More.’  More games, more events, more interviews, and you can offer more than audio.  In 2020, you can provide pictures to go with the words.

“For your on-air product, we suggest more variety.  One thing we started last year in Roseville was a 24-hour requests on our FM station.  Your music library will be more than you ever dreamed of as you get access to every title.  You can offer more games, feature a primary game on air, and stream others on your website and on your app.

“You can stream games, broadcast graduation and lectures from the local college.  You can do this by utilizing talent in your audience as they become even closer members of your family and become content providers.

“That can be as big as you want it to be, my personal favorite is developing a regular fish and game podcast that people in the area can use for their trips to the lake and is available on the web for folk who own vacation homes up there.

“You have abundant potential, it’s time to go get it.  Alright, Pete and I will take your questions, and we’ll get the electronic files to you when we’re done.  What do you think?”
