Radio Roseville - Chapter 19

“Good evening, sports fans, I’m Kathy Jones alongside Vicki James and we’re glad to bring you game one in the first-ever WR-Series.

“Tonight’s game features Tony’s Tigers as visitors against the home squad, Roseville Reds.  We’ll back in a minute to explain how this happens and get the game started.  Baseball is back on WRSE.”

As the commercial for Gus & Tom’s played, Kathy cued the two gamers, Matt Post for the Tigers and Dane Blaney for the Reds to get things started.  The idea was one Vicki picked up in researching broadcasting online games, so the producer can get the effects ready before the play is announced.

“Welcome back, I’m Vicki James.  Tonight’s teams are the chess pieces of Matt Post from Tony and Dane Blaney from Roseville.  They control their team’s pitcher, align the defense, determine the line-up, control the batter, and manage the game.

“It’s a seven-inning game, and we’ll interview the team managers in the middle and bottom of the second, fourth, and sixth innings.  Calling the game tonight, Roseville’s own, Kathy Jones.”

“Thanks, Vicki.  It’s great to have you with us tonight.  This game features Tony and Roseville.  Tony qualified through a play-in tournament and faces Roseville, the top seeded team.  Hollandale is the other play-in qualifier plays Clinton in game two.  Tony and Hollandale each won three games to get here. Tonight’s winners move into the main bracket of 32 teams which will play 33 games over the next three weeks.  The winner waits for the winner of the second bracket for the overall W.R.-series.

“Got all that?  If not, that’s OK.  We’ll explain it as we go along and there is a page on the station website to help you out.  Roseville is the home-team, so Matt Post’s Tony Tigers are while Dane Blaney’s Roseville Reds take the field.”

------------

Pete picked up dinner from Bear’s Supper Club out on the lake before heading to Jean’s for dinner.  It was the first time they were going to see each other since precautions against the virus closed dinner service at area restaurants.

As he pulled into Jean’s driveway, he chuckled as he saw two tables, eight feet apart on the front lawn under the big oak tree.  He parked near the back door, grabbed the food and set Jean’s delivery on her table before moving to his.

“Hi, Pete,” Jean said as she walked down the back steps.  “It’s not too windy, so I don’t think we have to shout.”

“It’s perfect.  How are you?”

“I’m fine.  The family is good.  We’re just trying to do what we can to halt the spread of the virus.”

“Me, too.  I’m getting used to wearing the mask around the station when interacting with others.  Thankfully, we have enough space, so no one shares a studio.  I’d rather everything was normal, but we actually saw our numbers go up.”

“That’s great.  I was listening to your ball game.  I never thought I’d listen to a video game!”

“Me neither, Jean.  Vicki and Kathy worked hard on this – we had 40 entries from around the listening area and even out-state as word spread around the gaming community.   I was going to do the second game, but something came up, so I’ll be on the mike tomorrow with Kathy.  Ready to eat?”

Jean set the Styrofoam clamshell in the bag after plating her dinner, “Yes, I am and thanks for taking the night off for me.  The food looks great."

“This may be the nicest outdoor restaurant ever, Jean.  What a nice evening.”

“June really gives us some great summer nights; let’s pray and then eat.

----

“And that’s the game, Roseville comes from behind in the ninth to walk it off on a two-base error.  Your final, Roseville 5, Tony 4.  Stay tuned, we'll be back with game 2 after the break, you're listening to WRSE, Roseville.”
