Radio Roseville - Chapter 18

Connie walked in the front door of Karen’s Kandies around 6 AM.  Karen shouted a greeting from the back, wearing a layer of flour.  She used to brush it off regularly, but tired of the effort and learning that customers liked seeing the owner in the kitchen changed her practice.

On the table in the assembly room next to the kitchen were racks holding trays of donuts and a dozen cinnamon rolls ready for icing.

“This looks great, Karen.” said Connie as she walked in the back.  “Sally is excited to host a distant social at her house.  I scheduled her because she already booked a second time.  How can I help?”

Karen picked up a small paint brush used to butter the rolls. “Well, you learned how to frost donuts, will you put chocolate on the first six?”

Connie picked up a bag filled with sweet chocolate and attached the tip. “As long as you don’t mind some quality control?”

Up front, Pete Moss and Kevin Storm were walked in.

“Hi Pete.”

“Hey, Kev.  How’s it going?”

“Going well.  If you have time today, I want to talk about our trip to Ironwood.”

“Sure, let’s grab out stuff and head outside – we can sit together at one of the picnic tables out front and still keep our distance.”

Kevin laughed, “That works for me.  I’ll see you out there.”

----------

Vicki James was up early working on the tournament.  There were 42 entries, so Kathy and Vicki told the last two they will be the first entries next time.

She thought virtual games would work but didn’t expect this much interest. If it goes well, she thought, the station can do this when there isn’t a pandemic.

The first games start this week, doubleheaders Wednesday and Thursday will whittle the 40 entries to a 32-team field.

Kathy and Vicki were announcing the first game, but found out just before the game Pete wasn't available for the second game, so Kathy told Coach Suter she was going to be his partner.

This morning, Jim Lynn, sent Vicki and Kathy an email indicating the opening weekend sold-out

Vicki and Kathy,

We’ve sold all the ads for the games this weekend, Wednesday through Sunday, Congratulations!

Not only does this fill a gap in our schedule, these games will help our bottom line.  I like to think of that as ‘job security.’

Nice job.

“I did some research into our new friends up in Ironwood.  It looks like a solid station.  They have a good share of the market, but since Jack is asking for help, I wonder if they might need help either with sales or a better margin for each ad they sell.”

“Pete, I looked at their station, too.  That will help, but I think we should wait to see how they interpret the situation and where they want help.  We might be trying to solve a problem they don’t know they have, or worse, offend them by offering a quick solution.”

“You know, Kevin, you’re right.  I’m glad you are going.”

Ken Records and Dr. Max Straw were at the station for the last hour of morning drive.

It was opening day, as Rose County re-opens most businesses.  The Roseville Chamber of Commerce paid for a live broadcast at 8 to advise customers how to stay safe and answer last minute questions from shop-owners trying to follow all the rules.

“Max, I’ll do the opening billboard, tease our first segment, then throw to commercial.  The main difference between this and our previous Covid-19 shows are a couple live spots with business owners, and this is only going to the WRSE audience.  Any questions?”

“I don’t think so, Ken. Most of this is common sense, but it’s been so long I’m sure there is anxiety for everyone.  I have the latest stats from the State and County health departments.  If you like, I can go over the state numbers out of the break with what it means for us here in Roseville.”

“Excellent, Max.  I’ll be in the main studio, you use studio A.  We’re live in three minutes.”
