It's difficult to have a parade, commemoration, or read the roll of fallen veterans when we should avoid gathering in large groups and stay socially distant.
Maybe it's easier to reflect on the sacrifice of those who gave all and the men and women serving today when we aren't distracted by a big party. Those returned home physically still might carry physical or mental battle scars the rest of their life.
The fight against COVID-19, our invisible enemy includes Military Guardsmen and women called to help with testing for Coronavirus; build emergency hospitals; and serve as workers during the primary elections.
It's natural to think of those serving during battle when it comes to Memorial Day, but those serving other times are ready at a moment's notice to fight for their country and our freedom.
The current War on Terror is soon starting its third decade. It is different from the wars fought by the parents and grandparents of those serving today. But, it doesn't fit in a tidy box or come with a catchy title.
I'll miss the calling of the roll, the Bugler playing taps, and the parade of veterans down Main Street today, so let's give honor and respect in our minds and hearts.
