Radio Roseville - Chapter 12

The medical helicopter landed in the middle of U.S. Highway 12.  As soon as its skids hit the pavement, Jacob Marberg and his partner pushed Jackson’s gurney toward the copter.  The flight paramedic and nurse were moving fast to meet their passenger and get him help fast.

“He’s stable for now, but his blood pressure is low.  Very low.  Godspeed.”

“Thanks, we’ll get him to the hospital inside 20 minutes.”
As the gurney rolled inside, the paramedic ducked under the door frame and the copter took flight.

--------------

Pete, Jean, and Emjay were in the car heading to Madison.  They knew that’s where their friend was going, but nothing about Steve’s condition.

“Oh, OK.  Thank you for your help.”  Emjay hit stop and put the phone down.

“Steve will be on the ground in 10 minutes.  There is a trauma team waiting.  My friend told me he is in serious condition, but lucky to be alive.”

As Pete focused on the road in front of him, Jean bowed her head.  “Pete you keep driving, I’d like to say a prayer.”

“Sure, mom.  Thanks.”

“Our Father in heaven, we ask you to surround Steve with your love.  Give him your strength and peace.  Please give the doctors and medical team healing hands as they work on him.  Your will be done, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen”

“Amen.”

------------

The helicopter pad looked like a scene out of a TV show.  The medic hopped on the gurney to continue chest compressions as the trauma team pushed Steve through the door and into the surgical suite.

“BP is 83 over 50.  Pulse is weak.”

The surgeons opened Jackson’s chest.  The broken leg was the injury Steve experienced, but a consequence of the crash was heavy internal bleeding now threatening his life.

-----------

Emjay and Jean got out at the emergency room entrance while Pete parked.

“Hello.  We’re friends of Steve Jackson.  I believe he came in a short time ago by helicopter.”

“Yes, ma’am.  You and are party can follow the yellow line on the floor to the surgical waiting room.  Mr. Jackson is in surgery.  Someone will give you an update.  If you don’t hear anything in the next 30 minutes, pick up the courtesy phone in the waiting room and it will ring here, and we’ll try to help.”

“Thank you.  Emjay, can you wait for Pete and walk him down?”

“Sure, mom.”

------------

“Time of death, 1:10 am.”

The operating room was silent.  A sheet was pulled over Steve Jackson’s body.  The chief surgeon walked down the hall.

“Hello, Mr. Moss?”

“Yes, Doctor.  I’m Pete, this is my fiance Jean and her daughter Emjay.  We are close friends and former colleagues of Steve.”

“I’m sorry to tell you....”

Jean and Emjay sunk to the couch.

“Mr. Jackson didn’t survive his injuries.  He fought.  He lost a lot of blood and his heart gave out.”

Pete looked at the floor, then slowly lifted his head.  “Thank you, Doctor.  I’m sorry.  Uh, I’m a good friend, but have no legal standing or anything as power of attorney.  How can I help?”

The doctor extended his hand.  “Pete, someone will be in shortly.  Any help you can provide will be appreciated."

When Jean and Emjay stood to hug Pete, all eyes in the room were red.
