Radio Roseville - Chapter 8

Steve Jackson was in his fourth week at the big station in Milwaukee.  He spent the first three weeks dividing his time between work on future programming tweaks and his show making its debut tomorrow.

Jackson missed Roseville but was feeling at home and liked the challenge.  His show is focusing on the neighborhoods within the larger city.  He divided metro Milwaukee into five sections, one for each day on the air.  Since moving to Cream City, he spent part of everyday meeting community leaders and talking to folks in diners and coffee shops.
It was a lot easier meeting with people before the virus came to Milwaukee.

For tomorrow’s show two guests were scheduled, a registered nurse and leader of the local food bank.  Jackson figures his audience wants information about the virus, but also something to help while they spent almost all their time at home.

A buzz interrupted his train of thought.  “Hey Jax.  Can you come back to Roseville this weekend?  There is a party for Pete and Jean at Jeff’s house Saturday night.”
Jackson smiled as he read the message from Vicki James.  “Count me in.  What time should I be there?”

“7:30ish will be great.”

Jackson entered the date into his digital calendar and wrote it on the analog calendar kept on his desk.

Thursday was the first round of the State Girls Basketball tournament and Kathy Jones was there to broadcast the semi-final game between Roseville and Cuba City.  News from the outside was all anyone could talk about since the professional basketball games were cancelled over concerns for the virus and its possible spread in large crowds.

Roseville is scheduled to play the last game of the evening, which gave her time to eat, review her notes, and watch the game which will send a team to the final to play the winner of Cuba City and Roseville.

------------------

Coach Suter got to Gus & Tom’s early to eat and watch the first game of the evening on TV before Roseville plays.  George Bauer, Jake’s dad, was coming in to help and share his memories of the last time Roseville got to the state tournament.

Suter knew it was a tough match for Roseville as Cuba City was a long-time power when it came to girls’ basketball.

--------------

Jake and Emjay Bauer, plus Emjay’s sister, Elaine, were driving to the game.  They were streaming the WRSE broadcast in the car hoping they would get to the arena before the pregame show was over.

-------------

Pete and Jean were having dinner at Jean’s place, the TV tuned to the broadcast of the game.  It was the first big game in Roseville history that Pete wasn’t on hand for, but that comes with the territory as responsibility grows.

He was thrilled for the team, the coach, parents, and the town, but wouldn’t trade his place at Jean’s for anybody.

“Say Pete, are you missing this?”  Jean asked as she walked into the living room where the TV was on.

“Well, a little.  I always loved doing play-by-play wherever the game was; but I’m happier sitting here with you.”

Jean smiled.  She knew Pete missed the action but knew how much he loved her.  “I know and I’m glad you’re here.  But when they win tonight, why don’t we plan to get up there Saturday for the championship game.”

Pete looked at her with a big smile, “That’s just another reason I love you.” as he hugged her tight.
