Radio Roseville - Chapter 6

You are on the air with Dr. Max.”

“Uh, Good Morning Dr. Max, Ken.  This past week I was working in the yard cleaning the flower beds and around an area where there are several trees growing.  Ever since, I’ve been scratching like crazy.  Isn’t it too early for poison ivy or poison oak?”

“Good Morning, John.” replied Dr. Straw, “I’m sorry to tell you this, but your call is a good reminder for everyone.  Just because there are no leaves on the plant and it may appear dead – the stuff inside poison ivy called urushiol can cause an allergic reaction.  In fact, the plant could be dead and still give you a rash

“In most cases, your pharmacist can recommend an over-the-counter cream which will help.  If you are anxious to work in your yard – dress appropriately and treat all the brush as if there are allergens inside.  That’s also a good reason not to burn yard waste because the allergens can become airborne.”

“Thanks, John.” Ken jumped in.  “You are listening to Dr. Max Straw, a noted allergist and medical doctor recently retired from University of Wisconsin.  This is The Next Straw on the Records - you are listening to WRSE, Roseville.  We’ll be right back with more calls.”

Vicki hit the station jingle before the first commercial played and let Max and Ken know they had three minutes before they were back on air.  Vicki was producing the show while training the new evening disc jockey on how to run their talk radio segments.

Carl West was five years into his broadcasting career but appreciated a hand learning the ropes.  While the basics didn’t change, each station has their own way of doing things and it was nice to learn the ins and outs before flying solo.

Jake and Emjay Bauer felt their phones buzzing while grocery shopping.

Emjay’s sister Elaine heard the phone rattling on the bedside table – wondering why someone was calling so early.

Those were three of the people Jean and Pete sent text message wedding announcements.

Ken Records’ phone was in silent mode when his screen lit up.

Jeff Danson, the morning guy and chief engineer, was on his second cup of coffee.

“Hi, Pete and I want to invite you to our wedding.  Please save the last weekend in September on your calendar, because we can’t imagine taking this walk down the aisle without you.”

Ten members of the friend, family, and station circle got the message right and reacted immediately.

------------------

“Hey, Pete,” Jean said as she pulled out her phone, “looks like the news is out.”

She showed him her phone:

“CONGRATS! 😀 I’m SOOOOO Happy for U.”

“I knew something was up! CU L8R.”

“Mom, this is awesome news. He’s a great guy. It’s on my calendar. ILY ^5.”

----------------

Kathy Jones was driving to Columbus, Wisconsin when she heard her phone buzz.  The high school there is hosting the sectional final for the State Girls Basketball tournament.  Kathy was ready.  While she prided herself on calling a fair game on both sides, she knew it would be good for the station if the Roseville girls could win and move to the Regional next week.

It would be good for Jones, too.  She convinced Pete and sales manager Jim Lynn to put a few girls high school games on the air during the regular season and full coverage if a team in their coverage area was alive in the tournament.

For tonight’s game, the Sports Tonight crew was doing a second straight night from Gus & Tom’s with a pre-game show.  According to records Kathy found, this was the first time the Roseville girls ever made it this far, which created a “Black Friday” kind of ad blitz by the local businesses.
