Radio Roseville - Chapter 4

Connie Temple was excited to go to work.  It was her first day at Karen’s Kandies as the Katering and Community Outreach Director plus “other duties as assigned.”

Connie smiled at the way Karen laughed while explaining what her vision was for Connie’s job and how it will position their shop in Roseville.  Other duties as assigned, Karen told her, might include helping with delivery or even working the counter on occasion.
Temple was OK with that, relishing the thought of being front and center for the popular shop and expanding its reach.

Since she was hired, Temple put together a proposal for Sunday deliveries to area churches and two day a week special coffee and breakfast sandwiches at Roseville High School.

The church deliveries would include two dozen sliced doughnuts and two gallons of coffee for $50.

The key for the shop was getting standing orders for each weekend to manage the expense side of the equation.  Churches could add to the order as needed at a discount, and Connie developed a way for the shop to handle congregations who asked members to “adopt” the doughnuts and coffee order on a weekly basis.  If the slot was empty the Monday ahead of church, a regular invoice was sent to the church.

Connie was a long-time volunteer at Grace Lutheran and knew how much work it was to get the coffee and treats in place every Sunday.  She guessed offering to handle the logistics for them would be welcome.  Another factor, she was certain, was offering the doughnuts and coffee at a slight discount could get more parishioners to visit the store during the week.
------------

Kathy Jones didn’t have to get to the station until 10, but she was working anyway at her kitchen table with a cup of hot chocolate going over line-ups and statistics for the game between Roseville and Mt. Ayr.

She was thankful that the week to week preparations for the Sports Tonight broadcast were routine, as it allowed her more time to get ready for the game broadcast.

One thing she hadn’t realized while co-hosting Sports Tonight when it started was that the play-by-play voice was responsible for interviewing both head coaches then producing the packages that were broadcast before the game.  Second, she developed a regular halftime feature that gave her and the analyst a chance to relax a few minutes between halves.

Coach Suter was the lead voice at Gus and Tom’s for basketball.  He loved reaching out to former colleagues to appear or tape interviews.  If they wouldn’t do that, he got them to make sure the station was given score updates and a wrap up for each game.  Sometimes, Suter would get the coach to do a phone interview after the game.
-----------

When she accepted the program director position, Vicki James didn’t know sports were also a piece of programming.  For several years, WRSE used part-time employees to run the board during the game.

That was how she got her start at the station while a junior in high school.  The part-timers made sure the commercials were lined up and played when they were scheduled.  They had to be ready to play the station identification and occasionally called on for a live read of the weather forecast.

As a way of refreshing her memory of those days, she decided to run the board herself for this week’s game.  James planned to create a checklist for the students to use in getting games on and off the air smoothly.
-----------

Jean Marberg listened to Emjay’s last newscast of the morning on her way home from the family shop.

It jolted her back to the life-changing couple of days she experienced the last couple days.  She agreed to marry Pete, although they still hadn’t told anyone.  The thought made her smile.  There was something about Pete that made sense.

It was different than her first marriage.  Not better or worse, just different, a different perspective that comes with experience and a better understanding of what marriage looks like.
