Extreme TV

From 2003 to 2012, Extreme Makeover Home Edition was one of the most popular shows on television.

As happens with most shows, at some point the audience moves on or the program runs out of ideas.  The ABC show featured Ty Pennington and a crew of designers working with contractors and volunteers to build a new home for a deserving family.

The show is back on Sunday nights, this time on HGTV and hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson who previously starred on Modern Family.

Two shows in, the concept is the same - a deserving family is whisked away while crews demolish their inadequate house and build a new one.

While I think it would be interesting to hear how the logistics (permits, zoning, working with neighbors) are arranged before the work starts; clearly the chosen family is as important as the construction.

In week two, the family is five siblings, refugees from the war-town country of Congo welcomed to Ogden, Utah.  The show captures their resilience in leaving a difficult and dangerous life to reach the hope and promise of living in America.

It's a family-friendly show with a good message that will leave you with a smile.  It won't win a trophy from the critics, but you might enjoy it anyway.
