My Week That Was - January 25

6 inches fell last Saturday.          1/18/2020 dwm photo
We finally had a good amount of snow fall; as much as six inches in south west Dane County.

The forecast called for snow to start as drizzle, so I covered my windshield with a sheet of plastic and lifted the wiper blades off the window.

It's old trick.  It keeps blades from freezing to the glass.

I'll concede it looks goofy - especially if it isn't snowing.

This week I'm getting involved in a science project.  Not like the ones we did in grade school where you and your partner try to prove eggs can bounce or squeeze into a pop bottle (actual projects I did at St. Paul Lutheran School).

It's called "All of Us" and is a project with a goal of following 1 million people across the country.  The goal is making medicine more precise in how it is practiced.

When I signed up, the numbers indicate the project is a quarter of the way to the number of participants they want.  I go in for a blood draw in a few weeks.  Beyond that, there will be occasional questionnaires to complete and give scientists permission to monitor my medical records over the next ten years.

It's better for everybody that I'm on this side of the laboratory.

Wednesday our office received new laptop computers.  Our Information Technology person helped us make the switch, and took care of it quickly.  It helps that 95% of our documents are on a server separate from the laptop.

After she left, there was time to check it out.

Thursday morning, the laptop seemed fine, until I tried logging in to the donor database we use.  After reaching the home page, the cursor was pulsing for no apparent reason and when I tried clicking on something it took a long time, literally 10 minutes at one point, to open.

An hour later the I.T. department rode to the rescue.  Gordon solved the issue by resolving the display size and installing an update.  It's nice working in a company with information technology specialists available to fix what feel like unsolvable problems.

Friday was the first time Oakwood Village's east campus hosted a Red Cross blood drive and I was glad to be part of it.

More than 25 donors rolled up their sleeves and a second drive is already on the schedule.  There is a significant shortage of blood right now, so if you are eligible, I urge you to find a drive or blood center near you.

January is ending with a string of snowy days.  It's snowed on and off since Wednesday, but hasn't amounted too much beyond what fell last weekend.  That might surprise folks watching TV weather warn viewers about "alert days" and danger caused by a couple inches of white.

I hope your week was a good one and you're keeping all four tires on the pavement!
