Chapter 6 - Out Fishing

Steve looked over the side of the boat at the red and white bobber.  It seemed to be a kiddie ride at the fair.  Up and down with each passing wave, but no sign of a bite.

"Jeff, I gotta tell ya, this fishing hole of yours seems like a big dud."

"I get that, man.  Trust me, these fish are waiting for us to present the bait in a manner so it is simply irresistible."

As the last words left Jeff's mouth, his afternoon drive counterpart started singing Peter Gabriel's 80's song, "Simply Irresistible."  "I've got to think before I speak," Jeff thought.

The two disc jockeys reeled in their lines and moved to another fishing hole in the back bay of Lake Pokegama.

"Steve," Jeff continued, "the fishing is the thing - catching them is a whole lot of icing on the cake.  You release your tension with each cast and breathe deep as the bobber rises and falls."

"Man, that's deep," came the reply, "for you.  Maybe even deeper than the lake."

Both laughed and each grabbed another soda from the cooler.

They talked about the storm, the damage and how everything sounded on WRSE.  Jeff thought having a meteorologist, news director, and the sheriff providing information gave the audience what it most needed.

"Now of course," the morning man offered, "we have to be meet that standard or pass it the rest of the storm season.  There are ways we can do it and if we do, it will boost the station's ratings when folks realize they can rely on us any time of day."

Downtown, inside Gus & Tom's, the two owners were meeting with Ken Records.  The weather radios were arriving the next day and the trio was reviewing the distribution plan to area nursing homes, apartment complexes, and homes in every section of the county.

As the conversation came to a conclusion, the conversation turned to the folks hurt by the recent storm.  Ken offered the first three days of the week to raise money to help Jake Bauer and Diane Buck recover, rehab, and recuperate.

Ken told the guys Marberg Implement gave him the idea and planned to match all gifts into the effort up to $25,000.  Diane's husband works at Marberg and the Bauer family was some of the first families from Germany to settle the area in the early 1800s.

"Guys, I'm thinking you might want to be part of this, too.  We're going to ask folks to call in with their storm stories and how they rode out warnings in their basement."  Ken explained.  "I would like your help.  I believe we're going to uncover some folks who aren't getting these radios or have storm damage they can't repair.  I'm thinking with your leadership and maybe our friends at Marberg, we can get pop-up teams of handymen and women to respond and repair right during the show."

Tom spoke up, "Ken, I really like that idea.  I'm sure the lumber yard and the car dealers will jump on this and it will bring everyone together.  We aren't going to do a match this time, but we'll start the show Monday morning with a gift of $5,000.  Just make sure you take my call this time!"

Ken smiled, "Oh, I'll take it.  I bet we might even talk about somebody's restaurant."   They laughed,  heading out to get things ready for Monday.
