My Week That Was - June 29

I spent nearly six hours at the University Ridge Golf Course last Saturday watching players who were and still are household names in the golf world.

One man getting attention is John Daly.  He burst on the scene with a win at the 1991 PGA Championship, then won the British Open four years later.

In his 50s, he still exudes a "man of the people" vibe who grips it and rips it.  He's endured long stretches of rough road - much of it his own doing.

In spite or because of that, he has a lot of fans.

He has a presence.  When he drove up to the 10th tee (golfers are allowed to drive a cart in the Champions Tour, but if the golfer rides, the bag must be carried), he attracted attention and not just for his loud pants (photo above left).

Daly was a "zero to hero" at the PGA Championship when he was the 9th alternate, made the field and won.  His non-Country Club personality has made him a hit with galleries around the world.

Monday I spent the whole day on our Prairie Ridge campus and a good part of Tuesday I returned for the 8th and final pizza party floor lunch.  The pizza party had the largest turnout yet, with everybody on hand who signed up.  We sure went through the pizza, including an extra one I apparently received at no charge.

Just a day earlier, it was exciting to wrap up fundraising to purchase a motorized flag pole for the campus entrance where it will raise and lower a 5 foot by 8 foot flag with a touch of a button.

I can't wait to see it in action.

Lunch on Wednesday was our annual "walk to the carts" day.  The business park near campus hosts one or more food trucks on a regular basis, so a number of us walk a mile or so to the cart, sit around a large picnic table to eat, and walk back to work.  This year was the biggest group I remember with 10.  There was one food truck.  It was serving Hawaiian food - I tried the Hawaiian Chicken tacos, complete with pineapple salsa, declining the shredded red cabbage, it was pretty good.

You almost can't call Thursday a real work day, since it was spent riding to Milwaukee and back with a bus full of residents to watch that afternoon's Seattle versus Milwaukee baseball game.

It was an interesting trip.  It was sunny and warm when we left around quarter to 11.  Sunny and hot during the game, thanks to Liz our seats were in the shadows all day long, so we didn't suffer.

After getting back on the bus, it was maybe 10 miles west when we ran into rain and some very dark storm clouds.  We didn't have to deal with storms, but maybe we did since traffic didn't get above 35 miles an hour until the skies started to clear.

More on the matinee game in this spot tomorrow.

Friday was fairly calm at work - one meeting and a variety of office work to do.  The sky became very, very dark before 7 am, then stayed that way until 10.  After that, it heated up quick, like its summer or something.

I hope you have a great week!
