Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Putnam Co. - #71 Baker's Camp

Baker's Camp Covered Bridge, County Rd 650 North.

It's another bridge with two names - Baker's Camp and Hillis.

But in reviewing a number of resources I didn't find history for either.

Built in 1901 by J.J. Daniels, I'm guessing there was a place near the bridge where some guy named Baker had a camp.  It is also likely the Hillis family were landowners near the site of the bridge.

It's been remodeled twice, including 2014 which is four years after these pictures were taken.

The photo at right is my favorite as I used the driver's side mirror to frame the shot.

It's located just a couple miles south of U.S. Highway 36 and east of the Putnam County town of Bainbridge (which seems like a good name for a bridge).

Baker's Camp is in the north half of the county, the third of a bridge trio south of the Pine Bluff and Rolling Stone bridges over Big Walnut Creek.

You will see those bridges November 15 and 29th in this space.

The bridge is in a valley with tree-lined banks on each side.

A pasture, perhaps the old camp site on the west side of the creek offers a nice view of the bridge.  During my visit the bridge was obscured by leaves; so a winter or early spring visit might produce a better shot.
