Two Tongues

Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.  James 3:10

How many times in a given day might the words coming out of our mouth get us into trouble?

Five, fifteen, fifty?

I think five might be a good day.

On the other hand, how many times might our words lift someone up and encourage them on their journey?

I hope it is at least five.

A tongue is compared to the rudder on a ship as it steers us into heavy seas or toward smooth water.

There is enough negative in our world.  We are bombarded by it whether it is directed at us or when caught in the crossfire.

The positive catches our attention because it can surprise us.

Since this is election season, we are subject to harsh ads that drag candidates and civility down.  Wouldn't it be nice to hear: "While I disagree with Mr./Ms. on this subject; I appreciate their opinion and would like to discuss it, so whomever is elected we might find the best solutions for our constituents."

I don't think we need to hold our breath.  However, since some families are divided over politics (of all things), we might try a similar approach at home and work to learn why they take a particular stand without judgement.

That sounds a push in the right direction.
