My Week That Was - Sept 29

It's been a month since heavy rains swamped much of southwest and south central Wisconsin with amounts ranging from 5 to 14 inches.

That much water is a powerful force.  It will take months and in some cases, years to recover.

Last weekend I rode into one of the areas affected.  Erosion caused by those heavy rains closed parts of the Military Ridge State Trail.  A sign and gate caused me to turn around and look for another place to ride.

We started the day with breakfast at Cafe Hollander at Hilldale Mall.

It is one of five locations in Wisconsin.  They are modeled after cafes in Belgium, Luxemburg, and the Netherlands.

Their simple waffle is unlike any you will find at most breakfast places.  The beignets are worth the trip all by themselves.

It is more than breakfast; I hope to learn the rest of the menu soon.

The highlight of the week for me was the Milwaukee Brewers.  They swept St. Louis to clinch a playoff  berth and move within a breath of winning the division.

Watching the post-game celebration Wednesday night was joyous.  I loved the words from Manager Craig Counsel, who described the win as for the fans in the stands, the fans at home, and the folks in retirement communities who count on the Brewers for three hours of entertainment throughout the summer.  The sight of Milwaukee icon Bob Uecker dancing in the clubhouse while players poured Milwaukee's finest over his head was wonderful.  He was as happy as any player.

The Brewer season ends tomorrow - the post-season begins Tuesday.  Go Brewers!
