Michigan Lights - Frankfort North Breakwater

The North Breakwater Light, Frankfort, Michigan

I'm not sure why we missed the Frankfort light our first trip up the Lake Michigan coast.

The Point Betsie lighthouse looked like a spot I needed to visit and the Robert H. Manning light appeared interesting.  I should have traded the Manning for Frankfort, but now I have both.

Betsie Lake empties into Lake Michigan creating a natural port, so it is where the first European settler looked to build a city; an effort bolstered when a Detroit company developed land in the area.

The city of Frankfort is picturesque, with a Main Street which looks like a movie set.

Built in 1912, the light on the North Breakwater eventually moved to the end of the expanded breakwater in 1932 and placed on a new 25 foot tall base to guide ships into the Frankfort harbor and Lake Betsie.

The history of Frankfort water navigation includes tragedy as two light keepers died in the line of duty early in the 20th Century.

Today the light and nearby beacon stand ready to welcome weary fishermen and boaters after modern adventures on the big water.
