Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Gibson Co. #19 Wheeling

Wheeling Covered Bridge
Gibson County  (dwm photo)
The Wheeling Covered Bridge still spans the Patoka River, but the vehicles cross the water a few feet away.

It is open to pedestrians, and thanks to renovation efforts in 2000, also features landscaping to compliment the bridge's beauty.

I can't find additional history on the bridge built in 1877.  It closed to traffic in 1976.

Built in 1877 over the Patoka River.

Aging in place next to its replacement is a regular reminder of life before 55 miles an hour felt like living in the slow lane.

A one lane bridge reminds me of quiet roads and willing to wait at one end while an oncoming wagon travels past.

Considering some days it feels like torture when the person in front of you in the automated check-out line takes more than 30 seconds; it is refreshing to exhale, relax, and pause a minute.

Volunteers preserve
their history. (dwm)

The Wheeling Bridge is just north of Princeton in Gibson County.  If you get here, I hope you also take time to check off the Big Red Bridge from your list.  (Read the 10/12/2017 blog on it.)
