It is a replica of the original made in 1893 for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Wisconsin women raised money after the World's Fair to cast it in copper.
That statue stood outside nearly 100 years in Madison's rain, snow, heat, and cold. The original went inside at that point and a new version was made for its current post.
The woman holding a flag while reaching to the skies was placed here in 1996 to commemorate the 76th anniversary of Women's Suffrage.
Her name is a source of confusion. She's been called "Miss Forward" and "Lady Forward."
Forward is Wisconsin's motto.
The gold statue at the top of the Capitol dome is sometimes mistakenly called Forward. That's not who it is. The gold statue is "Wisconsin," I guess you might say they are cousins - just don't mix them up.
