Game 4 - Packers - Bears

It was the 195th time the guys from small-town Green Bay played the guys from broad-shouldered Chicago.

Chicago won 94 of the previous meetings.  Green Bay won 94.  They tied 6 times.

How about this, Chicago scored 3,331 points in the previous 194 match-ups.  The Packers tallied 3,335.

The last time Green Bay lead the all-time series was way back in 1933 when they had 11 wins, 10 losses, and 4 ties against the Bears.

84 years later, the Packers lead the series again.

Coming into the game, Green Bay was missing both starting tackles and the two primary backups for that position.  It didn't seem like a formula for a win, let alone by a big margin.  Like most Packer fans, I was a bit nervous about the game.

It started perfectly for the Pack with a 75 yard touchdown drive ignited by several running plays, which Chicago wasn't expecting.  Aaron Rodgers passed to Davante Adams who muscled his way past the goal line and a 7 - 0 lead.

On the Bears first play, Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews strip sacked the Chicago QB.  It was recovered by the Pack at the Chicago 3.  Rodgers to Cobb, 14 - 0.  On his play, Matthews set a new team record for quarterback sacks.

The game was starting to feel like it should be a walk-over, but a second straight Bear turnover lead to a Packer punt.  Then a 47 minute lightning delay emptied the stadium and forced the TV broadcast to tap dance.  The announcers seemed to agree this was going to help Chicago.  I was concerned Packer momentum might have been washed away.

Not so fast.

The Packer defense forced another Chicago punt.  On the next Bear possession, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix intercepted a Mike Glennon pass.  Green Bay scored the next three touchdowns, two of them on passes from Rodgers to Jordy Nelson and the defense finished by collecting 4 Bear turnovers.

A late Chicago score made the final 35 - 14.

The worst play for Green Bay was late in the third quarter as the Packers looked to get another score. Davante Adams made the catch and was laid out with a helmet to helmet hit.  The game stopped.  He was wheeled off.  The latest from the stadium indicates he didn't suffer a serious injury.

This was a huge win.  Missing two key offensive linemen and playing on a short week, Green Bay rose to the challenge and pushed aside the weather distraction to ring up a complete win.

It lifts them to 3 - 1 after the first quarter of their season and a series lead over the Bears 95 - 94.

Now they get to rest and recover over the next 10 days before playing the Cowboys in Dallas October 8.  Let's go Pack!
