Snow Hype

It's Winter.

We live in Wisconsin.  It's going to snow.

I really think most of us in America's Dairyland expect to see some snow pile up anytime from October all the way into March or even April.

However, in newsrooms around the Badger State each flake is major breaking news.

Seriously.

Friday night, WKOW broke into programming just after 7 pm to alert viewers we could get up to 3 inches overnight and the Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Sunday (today).

Winter weather can be serious, even life-threatening.

Each of us should drive more carefully - leaving extra room to slow down and be careful when traction is less than summer-perfect.

It seems to me that Brian, Gary, Amy and the rest of TV's meteorologists raise the caution flag nearly every time it snows - the caution falls on deaf ears.

40 years ago (my goodness, am I getting old!) we had winter weather with big drifts and heavy snowfall.  We called it Sunday.

I found winter amusing while living in the Hoosier State as I listened to the somewhat hysterical and breathless weathermen and women urging us to take precautions if there was a chance we might see even 4" of snow.

For their defense, Hoosiers aren't as used to winter weather and cities didn't have the trucks and plows to handle a big snow like we do in the north.

Comedian Ron White is known for saying, "You can't fix stupid."

It seems to apply to Wisconsin winters and plenty of other places and situations around the world.

It's winter in Wisconsin and it's going to snow.

We can't expect to go outside in shorts and t-shirts and stay warm.

We can't drive like the streets are clear and ice-free when they are snow-covered and slippery.

I'm giving a pass to our friends further south, where they don't have real winter experience.

But it would be nice if we saved waving the Winter Storm Warning flag for real dangerous weather.
