Checking that List

Christmas shopping is a major mover in the economy.

The American Research Group reports the average American family plans to spend $929 for gifts this year, up from $882 in 2015.

I think my family is helping pull that average down a bit.  I suspect we might spend half the average.

Might.

Judging by the list in one hand and the expense ledger in the other, we're getting close.  There are presents for each other; a few for the kids; a niece and nephew; and some friends we want to recognize with small and hopefully thoughtful gifts.

At Christmas, at the end of the year, it's also time for giving of gifts to our favorite charities.

The jingle bells rung by volunteers for the Salvation Army greet shoppers in stores still willing to host the folks ringing bells to help those in need.

I like putting something in the buckets when possible.  Since the buckets aren't equipped with a machine to swipe a credit card, and with many going cashless these days, people without bills in their pockets can't put them in the buckets.

While we "average Americans" enjoy our bountiful Christmases... it's worth thinking of those who won't and deciding to put out a helping hand.  I hope you join me.
