Culinary Mysteries

Have you traveled some place and not spoken the language?

That was me, sitting in the Capitol Theater inside Madison's Overture Center for 90 odd minutes with Christopher Kimball.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with Chris Kimball.  He recently was the host of "America's Test Kitchen" seen on PBS affiliates around the country.  He's also a former editor of Cook's Illustrated magazine.

He has a lot of fans, one of them my dear wife, and they were excited to be in his Madison audience.

He is knowledgeable about food.  Really, just ask him.

What I found confusing was what felt like a condescending and somewhat patronizing attitude throughout his performance.

He used terms for foods that were unfamiliar, not just to me (admittedly ignorant on high - end food stuff), but to many in the audience.

The highlight of the evening was a demonstration on how to make the perfect pie crust.  However, no recipe or instructions were provided.  I guess it's necessary to subscribe to Mr. Kimball's latest venture to get the answer to this mystery.

I'm sure many of the 1,000 in the audience got all his references and are signed up for the magazine. The rest of us who like food, and were hopeful of learning more from an acclaimed expert, were judged not to be worthy of enrolling in his class.
