Memorial Day

Memorial Day is in a tough spot on the calendar.

The three day weekend most of us get because it includes Memorial Day has become more of a kickoff for summer.

When we lived in South Dakota, they stuck to the tradition of honoring veterans on the 30th of May wherever it fell on the calendar.  This year the traditional and contemporary dates meet.

The state government closed on May 30th.  Tributes and services are held at the state capital and cemeteries across South Dakota.

The freedom we enjoy has been earned for us time and again since before the Revolutionary War.

Like this year's calendar - it's OK to have fun and recognize our veterans.

Memorial Day isn't about creating guilt trips for those having fun this weekend.

It's time to pause to give thanks to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and all those who served and are serving our country now.

Memorial Day is a time for parades where we stand for the flag, applaud the veterans, and stand in silence as the roll is called.

Just find a way to say thank you.

Too busy today?  Say thanks throughout the year to those you see in uniform (and their families) for all they did and do.

Consider it another Thanksgiving - a day to remind us of the deep and abiding values we enjoy and extend our thanks for more than a day.

In the midst of the coming summer excitements and the fast approaching elections on which our democracy depends - all of us can agree to start with a simple and sincere Thank You.
