Feeding Time

We installed some bird restaurants on the deck out back recently.

They are quite popular.

Goldfinches, Cardinals (Female below right), Chickadees, and House Finches are the most common visitors.

A couple of hummingbirds dash in for a couple quick sips then zip away.

There is a feeder intended for Orioles, but so far none (not even the baseball variety) have bothered to show. The House Finches seem content enjoying the jelly and orange left for the Orioles, however.

Like many folks who feed birds it's squirrels who offer the largest challenge.

Sammy and Willy are the two reprobates prowling around, searching for an angle or a path to the sunflower seeds hanging tantalizingly before them.

WD-40 on the pole from which hang the feeders prevents the furry creatures from getting too far, but then they tried jumping down from a tree onto the feeder.  That required moving the feeder out from under the branch.

For now the squirrels hop onto the deck, bounce off a chair and onto the railing to see if they can reach it today.  No dice.

Their tale twitches and it seems each is deep in thought.  Finally, the leave the deck huddling below the feeder for seeds on the ground.

Thistle seed and sunflower seed isn't appetizing to sparrows apparently, so far they haven't secured a reservation.

The birds outside the window put on a good show... better than the shows on the television glowing to the right.
