Falling Colors

The weather people (who are supposed to know) said this past weekend should feature leaves at or near their "peak" color.

I peeked, and I beg to disagree.

A few yellows, a couple of reds, and a tree or two alight in orange, but it seemed most of the trees were either green, bare, or had a pocket of color.

At Governor Dodge State Park the trail near the short cliff/waterfall was filled with yellow Maple leaves and adorned with bright sunlight.

The water comes from a natural spring tapped once upon a time by farmers who settled here.  It flows still and creates a stream which saunters toward the falls.

Now it doesn't so much fall as trickle or slide over the large rounded rock before dripping into the puddle below.

Maybe we get another opportunity at a color peak this weekend. We just had the killing frost, so we'll see what, if anything, happens on the trees.

Jogging around the back roads in search of color is a bit like hide and seek.

But now it's "Hide and Seek for a peek at the peak."

One of the things about autumn in Wisconsin is you can never be sure when its going to end.  This week is a bit of "Indian Summer" with the mercury passing 70 after a death frost is usually the criteria, and another signal that fall is slipping away as the first breaths of winter sweep in behind.

The best advice is to enjoy whatever weather might be playing... pretty soon this record will be put back on the shelf for some time.
