48.5

Did you know a single first class postage stamp now costs 48 and a half cents?

What's up with the half-cent?  Not too long ago there was serious discussion about eliminating the penny from our money system, and not long after we need to bring a heavy-duty metal cutter to the post office to buy a stamp.

Seems strange to me.

Of course, at the Post Office we're getting "Forever" stamps which don't expire no matter the height to which postage rates jump.  So, if you buy a pack of 10 it's $4.85 or $9.70 for a book of 20.

It's the single stamp which makes for odd math.  Or mean we at least need to buy stamps in even numbers.

I needed three stamps.  The cost is $1.455.

The clerk where I purchased them charged me $1.45.

9 stamps are $4.3695.  Huh?

Undoubtedly teams of committees in the United States Postal System rates setting board room wrestled with this subjected for weeks.  Maybe months.

To them, the reason for this odd state of affairs could be clear.

It's not to me.  Please just price the stamp at $0.49.  Or $.50 to make it easier.

Otherwise, maybe the U.S. Mint could start turning out half-cents?
