Streaks

You do enough of something in a row, people start to notice.

Cal Ripken, Junior played baseball in 2,632 consecutive games over 16 years.  Lou Gehrig had the record before him who suited up 2,130 times.

Gehrig started the streak one day when the Yankees usual first baseman wasn't in the lineup.   Fewer people still know who he was.  In fact, Wally Pipp is pretty much only famous for never getting to start another game at first base again.

My favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, won the first two Super Bowls and 5 titles in 7 years during the 1960s.  Buffalo lost 4 straight Super Bowls, but getting there four straight times is a remarkable feat.

Joining the Packers with impressive streaks ate the De La Salle, California high school football team with 151 straight victories.  The Harlem Globetrotters didn't lose in 2,495 games.

In television, 60 Minutes has been on CBS since 1968, the oldest and most-watched newsmagazine show on the air.  The Guiding Light started on radio in 1937, switched to television in 1952 and stayed on the air 57 years.

Living a long time can bring a small measure of fame; Jeanne Calment of France died at age 122. Incredibly, she met Vincent Van Gogh as a child of 12 or 13.  So, that's two claims to fame.

You can do something hardly anyone wants to do and be famous, especially if you do a lot of it.  Patrick Bertoletti ate 10.63 pounds of Corned Beef and Cabbage in 10 minutes on March 16, 2007. Why?  I imagine it was the same reason people climb mountains.

Many, many years ago my friend and I competed to see how many consecutive pogo sticks jumps we could do without falling.  I'm not sure who won.  I think the winner made it past 100.  That's a lot of jumps.

There was one time, and only one time, I made 96 of 100 free throws.  You're right, no one else on the team practicing could believe it either.

This little ol' blog now has 1,115 posts.   It's a lot, but not a record.

My latest streak stands 18,993 days or 2,713 weeks plus 2 days.  It's not a record.  Not even close.

If I'm blessed to wake up tomorrow, that's one more day to the streak.
