In the Jungle

These early days of spring are when I notice Ferns the most.

Making a timid appearance through the soil, they slowly unfurl their fronds until they wave like flags - creating a dense growth in shady areas.

"Just make sure you fence them in."  That's a word of warning I remember about ferns, because if you don't have a barrier they will grow and expand their population over time.

Intensely green - ferns add a lush backdrop to a hillside (like the one behind mom's house).  If you can imagine the characters on "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" walking amidst the towering greenery, sunlight unable to reach the ground.

Little but tenacious.  They start small, digging in to stake their territory.

You find them as ornamental plants in gardens.  Some flourish in terrariums while others thrive as plants in aquariums.  Scientists have learned some varieties of ferns can pull pollutants from the air while others can help cleanse the ground.

Not all ferns are like the ones in the photo - which thrive in shady and moist areas of the woods.

Soon their brilliant green will be lost in the many hues of summer.  Enjoy the wild ferns and the fenced ferns of your garden - the life they nourish and miniature jungle they create.
