McFarland USA

McFarland USA has been in theaters for more than a month now, so it's not breaking news or anything, but let me pass along my recommendation to go see it.

Join a coach at the end of his career rope at what could be his last chance in a community that doesn't get a second look for most people driving through town.

It's a true story.  I recall reading in Sports Illustrated nearly 15 years ago about a cross country team and their unexpected string of successful season born from hard work and difficult conditions.

Locals and the coach engage in a face-off of sorts at the start before coming to an understanding.  The coach was hired to work with the football team.  That sport wasn't suited to the hot tempered coach and he stumbled upon the idea of forming a cross country team.

You could say it was a match made in heaven.  After more feeling out between the athletes and the coach who didn't understand the culture - they begin to find common ground.

It's not a sports movie, but it plays a large role in the story line.  It's an inspiring movie about people, who at their core, are more alike than different.  And where a place that doesn't look like home, finally feels like one.

Jog down to the theater soon and grab a couple tickets to McFarland, you'll be glad you did.  Enjoy the show!
