Roll Out the Barrel

Major League Baseball is just a few weeks from now, another sign that spring is warming up in the bullpen.

Jogging around the bases, throwing the ball around, or playing "500" in the backyard... it all adds up to fun.

It might not be the majors for you.  Maybe it's high school softball or baseball at the college or minor league level.

Leaving the field for a moment, the peanuts and Cracker Jack are an equally big part of the experience and major ingredients in the fun quotient for everyone at the park.

You might enjoy mascots or the grilled bratwurst or being able to spend a couple hours looking at green grass and the effort to put a bat on a ball or make a play in the field.

This year, I'm planning to make it to at least one Madison Mallards game and at least a few Milwaukee Brewer games.

Last year the Brewers were in first place 150 days before collapsing at season's end.  Before the season starts every team's fans are hopeful for the games to come.

The Brewers division presents a challenge.  The St. Louis Cardinals are perennially good.  The Pittsburgh Pirates are improving.  The Cincinnati Reds are primed to come back and the Chicago Cubs appear to be making some good moves.

The teams that succeed will have to win a majority of the games outside the National League Central and win more than they lose inside the division.

Where will the Brewers finish?

At this point of training camp, you have to assume the pillars of the team stand throughout the campaign.  If they do with timely pitching and hitting plus improved defense, I expect the Brewers to win between 85 and 90 games this year.

If the Brew Crew can do that, I expect to see them back in the playoffs.

Go Brewers!
