Pi Day

At 3:09:26 seconds today, a lot of math and number geeks will be pretty excited.

At that moment today, March 14, 2015 it will be exactly 3.14 15:9:26.

It's a once in a lifetime moment (unless you are very young and live to see 3/14/2115).

That's Pi to the 7th digit.  Of course, Pi goes on and on to the right of the decimal point.  If you want to see Pi to a million digits after the decimal click here.

My Dad would have enjoyed that moment today.  He loved math and numbers, a good thing since he was an engineer.

Just a slice of Pi, please is more my thought today.   Fortunately, there are plenty of places ready to reward the pursuit of Pi.  On the west side here they are pulling out the stops for Pi at Hubbard Avenue Diner and Bakery in Middleton.

If you like playing with food, go to Hubbard, but if you like playing with Pi, you want to go here.  The math genes from my father passed a generation and landed with our boys, so I'll stick with pie.

Less mathematical, but just as fun for me is finding those times where dates and clock time creates a succession of numbers.  That's much more difficult when it's the year 2015, because even in December the best I can find is 12-13-14.  Maybe we can squeeze in a thirteenth month into that week between Christmas and New Year.

Yet, it's fun to see a confluence of numbers like those today brings us.  It is a learning moment and an opportunity to look at math concepts in a fun and engaging way.

Have some pie or take a look at Pi.  Maybe create a circle and find your own piece of pi.

Just save a piece for me.
