It's Not the Snow...

 ...it's the drifts!

To the right is what it looked like Sunday morning, only midway through the winter storm passing through Madison.

Madison received close to 8" of snow, but that really isn't the story.

Judging by what was going around our place - that snow picked its spots.  A few places you could see clean concrete, while others had miniature mountains of drifts.

It may be the humidity, not the heat in the summer, but this time of year it's the drifting that can get you and force you to stay home.

Leaving home in these types of wintry conditions can be a real adventure.  If you are traveling with the wind and the wind blows straight down the road - then you should have clear sailing.

You will be delayed and have some serious travel problems when driving at an angle to the wind because that the condition that stacks up the snow.

It might look like fun to emulate some of those four wheel drive TV commercials and blast through them.  But, let me suggest you may not want to try such things on your own on a lonely country road.

Driving in snow is an acquired skill and must be re-learned each season.  Otherwise, why would so many folks seem to be driving on skates every time the first snow falls?

Snow is like our lives... if the wind is at our back there is no trouble to be found.  When we have snow mountains blown into our path, it's time for cautious and good planning.

We might tsk - tsk as we drive past cars who slid into the ditch confident in our own path; don't be so sure that's the reason.  Count your blessings and thank God for the many clear paths before us and for His help in finding the right road.

Be careful out there!
