Groundhog Day

February 2 - that time of the season when it almost feels like the calendar just can't turn the page and inch closer to March and spring.

Like the movie of the same name, we can start to feel like winter has become our own movie where each day the sun rises and we are no closer to warmer weather.

Making Groundhog Day special is the emphasis we bring to the day.  Whether its Jimmy in Sun Prairie or Phil in Punxsutawney - celebrations started to break up the monotony of a long cold stretch and that we'd survived this far and just need to hold on a few more weeks until we can feel our feet again.

Just finding out if there are only six weeks left until spring arrives or if there are six long weeks of winter before us somehow makes a psychological difference in our attitude.  For a day or two, anyway.

I think its fun and harmless.  Unless you get caught in one of those Groundhog Day gambling rings that attract all kinds of rodents and vermin.  Remember, groundhog odds are for entertainment purposes only.

Lacking a groundhog doesn't mean you can't enjoy the day.  Peak out the drapes and look to the east.  If you see shadows that means you can go back to bed since there are six weeks of winter to go.  No shadows = early spring!

You should celebrate either way with a trip to the couch so you can watch the movie a couple more times.  Happy Groundhog Day!

Late Addition - Maybe the prospect of six more weeks of winter even makes groundhogs grumpy as Jimmy, the Sun Prairie groundhog, bit the Mayor during today's ceremony!
