Saturday

The Bay City Rollers sang about it, "S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y night."

So did Chicago, "Saturday in the park..."

Both songs evoke different feelings for half of the weekend.

The younger anthem of the Rollers is all about the adventure, night life, celebration, and unlimited possibilities represented by a night on the town.

While the jazzy sound of Saturday in the park - I think it was the Fourth of July, is wistful and nearly melancholy in reminiscing about days of fun while wondering if a fun and care-free day can be found again.

Saturday is today.  It's full of possibilities.

A trip to the Farmer's market.  Casting a line in a crystal blue stream.  Playing guitar.

A long bike ride.  A nap on the couch.  Catching the home team on the tube.

In our 24/7/365 day world - Saturday for you might be a moving target and not fall on the space of the calendar with that name at the top of the page.

We only get 52 of these days each year, so they are precious.

Do you remember Saturday mornings as a kid?

I was up early to watch Davey and Goliath at 6:45, an animated children's show sponsored by the Lutheran Church.  Then it was one or two hours of the Bugs Bunny and Road Runner Hour. (Yes, I know the title makes no sense, but there was a time it went 120 minutes.)

After that, I was either shooed outside or put to work helping Dad or doing some project around the house.

This time of year, Saturday mean bike ride and college football.

When the boys were little and we had lots of laundry that needed to be done each weekend - I learned something very important.

A load of laundry took one half of football to get finished in our dryer.  So each autumn afternoon I would get the first laundry going just before kick-off and take the last load from the dryer sometime around midnight as the last west coast game came to a close.

These days there's not that much laundry, but there is no less college football.

It's fall - there's apples to pick and leaves to rake and games to watch - enjoy your SATURDAY.
