One Giant Leap

45 years ago, Neil stepped down the ladder, unsure what he might find when his toe hit the ground.

Would it be spongy, hard, or cheese?

Astronaut Armstrong found a dusty surface and shared the news with a world-wide audience, "One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind."

It's Moon Day today to honor that first moon landing and the dreams and possibilities that achievement unleashed.

The accomplishment also became a mockery of some of things we can't do.  "They can land a man on the moon, but they can't cure the common cold?"

Seen through the prism of modern technology, it's still one of the great accomplishments of all-time.

Any slight miscalculation in the launch and Apollo 11 might have flown right past our nightlight.  Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins completed the mission - while Collins orbited above in the Command Module, the Eagle landed at Tranquility Base.

The crew in space was lauded for their triumph, but it took a legion of workers and support staff working for nearly a decade to reach for the moon.

I was five when it happened, so my memories are fuzzy.

Do you remember the grainy television footage of the ghost-like figure stepping onto the moon?  Do you remember the newspaper headlines shouting the news?

There are still frontiers for us to explore... there are ocean depths yet to be reached.   I read recently that the grandson of Jacques Cousteau just completed a month under the ocean's surface at a depth of 63 feet - a small first step to more knowledge of unknown worlds.

There's so much to learn... let's keep exploring!
