Rounding the Plate at Rookies

It was my first time, making me a rookie at the grill of the same name.

Rookies is owned by Steve Schmitt, who runs the Shoe Box store in nearby Black Earth and Baraboo and owner of four teams in the college wood-bat summer Northwoods League here in cheese-land.

The place did not disappoint.

There is almost no evidence of walls or ceiling inside Rookies as virtually every square inch has a poster, photo, or shelf holding sports memorabilia collected by Schmitt throughout his life.  The menu says there are 6,000 pieces - I would guess at least twice that many.

It's a roadside bar and grill, but very much a family place that prominently features high school athletes on it's walls of fame.

Out back there is a wiffle-ball field, who can't love that?  I think it's awesome.  Inside and out many teams and athletes are honored, but St. Louis Cardinals' fans will really like all the reflected glory from many years of championships.  On the wall next to our table was a baseball signed by Stan the Man himself, Stan Musial.

We enjoyed the authentic Wisconsin Cheese Curds that had the flavor combining two things we're known for here - cheese and beer.  It would have been a good idea just to have that for lunch.

The minor league burger belonged in the majors, but maybe its size was holding it back.  Just the same, it more than filled me up and was made to perfection.  The steak fries delivered on the side made it a good double play.

There are a lot of sports bars out there, but among the ones I've walked into - this one has to vault to the top.  The authenticity of the decor, the friendly staff, good prices, and great food makes it a grand slam on all counts.  It'd be a fun place to watch a game, enjoy a beverage, celebrate an occasion, and have a great meal.

The name may say otherwise, but one visit will lead to the guest becoming a veteran in no time!
