The "Real" First Day of Spring

There is something about the first day that actually feels like spring.

Maybe the time of the vernal equinox is a good time to observe the arrival of a new season.  But, that doesn't mean that spring arrived.

Just calling a day "spring" because of the earth's orbit around the sun didn't make a huge impact around here, or other parts of the country that remain cold and receiving frequent snow.  Until this weekend, spring seems to be playing a grand game of "peek-a-boo" with us be peeking into our windows and running away.

It was glorious on Saturday to see puffy white clouds floating overhead and sunshine adding warmth - even though it only made the 40s that day.

Looking across the Rock River as it poured over the dam in Indianford, Wisconsin - I could see anglers trying to land a big one.  It looked like summer, although it didn't feel quite like one.

Yearning for the warmth of the summer sun is a good way to spend a spring day - it's a time to dream about a lazy day in the hammock or a bike ride across the county.

The rest of this week is expected to cool back a bit - that's pretty good news for the folks trying to harvest maple sap from trees and boil it down into the delicious syrup that goes so well with pancakes (and ice cream).

Some cool with the warm can also keep us from getting our boots too muddy too soon.

It might also slow some of the spring melt - which could be vitally important to keeping some of that moisture in the ground - instead of rushing downstream.

God is good - spring comes at the proper time at the proper pace and reveals the beauty of spring in unexpected ways and at surprising times.

With March leaving like a lamb, maybe we can turn the page on the calendar and in our minds from winter to spring.

Happy Spring!
