Third Coldest City in America!

Outside temp at game time... 10 above zero
The Weather Channel has made a list of the 20 coldest cities in the United States.

We folks here in Madison are #3!

Milwaukee is #4.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is #1 AHEAD of Anchorage.

Our December through February average temperature is 21.6 F.

Right about now, I think I can speak for everyone living in Madison, that we would take that 21.6 degrees in a puff of frozen breath!

It's an interesting compilation by the Weather Channel folks, but given the conditions here this January - there is a little feeling of piling on.

It did surprise me that former home, Indianapolis, is on the list at #15.  The winters I spent there could be cold and damp, but not so much snow and at least while I was there I don't recall any bone-chilling cold snaps.

The rankings were made by using the 30 year average temperature for the 100 largest cities in the country for the months of December, January, and February.

We'll have to get to work on a tourism slogan for this one...

"Welcome to Madison, where your groceries won't spoil in your car after shopping... even after four hours."

"Come to MadCity.. we're warmer than Minneapolis!"

"In Madison, we warm up in refrigerators!"

According to the Weather Channel, Madison's all-time record low was -37 degrees set on Jan. 30, 1951.

On average, subzero cold occurs 17 days each year, while subfreezing temperatures occur 152 days a year there.

Stop a moment and look at that again.

17 days below zero, but wrap your head around the idea that close to half of the year is below freezing... wow.

We may be cold, but we keep moving.  There are still folks biking to work; running in the morning; and fishing on the frozen lakes.

Today's high is projected to be 2 degrees below zero.  But, Wednesday we're due for a warm-up; it's going to hit 16!!

We're #3!  We're #3!

Put that on a t-shirt.  Hold on - let's put it on a sweatshirt instead..
