Volleyball Finals

For just the second time, the Wisconsin Badger Women's Volleyball team is the NCAA Final Four.

Quite an accomplishment for the Badger's new coach Kelly Sheffield and a team that missed making the tournament field a year ago.

They play Texas tonight in Seattle.  A win moves them into the Championship game Saturday against the winner of B10 foe Penn State and Washington.

I am not the most avid volleyball fan, I admit that.  There are times in the game it looks to me like the other team won the point and the official awards the point to the other team.  Kills, digs, blocks - there are as many statistics in volleyball as baseball - and volleyball is a much quicker paced game, so it must be difficult to track.

This season is a win whatever the outcome in the Final Four - the Badgers play in a tough Big 10 conference where seven made the tourney field and four qualified for the quarterfinals.
This bodes well for the future of Badger Women's Volleyball - their best player is a freshman this year and there are plenty of excellent players alongside.

After catching games in the Fieldhouse - I'm already looking forward to more games next season - and doing a little review and study of the rules so I can actually understand what's going on.

My distant memories of playing an earlier variation of the sport was you could only earn a point while serving, which made for very long games.

I much prefer this version of the game.  It is surprisingly exciting and tense, with each set in the balance and complete with scoring runs and high-flying athleticism.

The games are on ESPN2 tonight - let's go Badgers!

***They did it!  They beat Texas 3 to 1 and will play in the Championship game Saturday night against B1G rival, Penn State.
